What is Narcolepsy ?

Narcolepsy is a rare but significant quality-of-life sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, which may occur suddenly at inappropriate times. Narcolepsy may affect daily activities, work, and social interactions, but with medication and lifestyle management, symptoms and quality of life can be improved.

What are the symptoms of Narcolepsy ?

  • Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS): People with narcolepsy experience persistent drowsiness during the day, even after adequate nighttime sleep.
  • Sudden lethargy (Cataplexy): Muscle relaxation or even sudden collapse during emotional agitation, which may be triggered by strong emotions, laughter, etc.
  • Sleep Paralysis (Sleep Paralysis): A brief immobility during sleep or waking, accompanied by hallucinations.
  • Hypnagogic Hallucinations: Visual or auditory hallucinations that occur before falling asleep.

The exact cause of narcolepsy is unknown, but research suggests it may be related to the neurotransmitter dopamine and the hormone.

Who is susceptible to it ?

  • Narcolepsy usually develops during adolescence or young adulthood.
  • Genetic factors may influence the risk of narcolepsy to some extent.
  • The association of narcolepsy with specific genes is thought to contribute to its onset.

How to treat Narcolepsy ?

Narcolepsy can have serious effects on daily life, including driving safety, work performance and social interactions. Treatments include:

  • Medication: Some medications can help control the symptoms of narcolepsy, including medications that improve wakefulness and medications that inhibit the onset of cataplexy.
  • Lifestyle management: Ensure adequate nighttime sleep and avoid substances such as alcohol and caffeine that affect sleep.

Although narcolepsy cannot be completely cured, with proper treatment and management, symptoms can be effectively relieved and quality of life can be improved.
